An Aegean Bronze Age Chronology

Ian Hellström

Introduction

Many sources refer to the Aegean bronze age in terms of the so-called low chronology that is based on relative dating of pottery styles and connections to the Ancient Egyptian chronology. Modern scientific methods (e.g. carbon dating, thermoluminescence) all favour a high chronology, for which the eruption at Thera occurs around 1600 BCE.

The timeline based on the high chronology shown below is adapted from Shelmerdine and the (now defunct) Troia initiative from the University of Tübingen. The reference timeline for Ancient Egypt has been compiled from Ikram, Wilkinson, and Shaw. Supplementary information on the south-eastern Mediterranean extracted from World History Encyclopedia and Wikipedia.
